Workflow fit matters

Core finding

Problem

Electronic health records can strengthen continuity of care, but implementation fails when systems do not fit the realities of nursing work. The study examined nurses' views of EHRs and the factors associated with continued paper-based documentation.

Approach

  1. 1.Designed and conducted a cross-sectional survey of 65 registered nurses at University Hospital, Legon.
  2. 2.Analysed quantitative findings in SPSS to examine perceptions of EHR value and documentation practices.
  3. 3.Interpreted findings through a nursing-workflow lens, focusing on how technology can support rather than displace clinical judgement.

Learnings

  • Clinical technology succeeds only when it reflects clinicians' workflow and supports their professional judgement.
  • Implementation questions belong alongside technical performance in nursing informatics research.

Let's work together.
